Record numbers are expected to be disappointed when A-level results are published next week, because the recession has made competition even fiercer for places, the numbers of which have been cut this year.
A Guardian Investigation this week found that many universities already have no places left to offer through clearing, while a number, including Warwick, the London School of Economics and Nottingham, had turned away even students predicted to get the new top A* grade. Some 170,000 could find themselves without a place. |

Pembrokeshire County Council is the sixth Local Authority to undertake the benefits of using Autology in their schools. There are six schools involved in the project and include: Ysgol Greenhill (Greenhill School), Ysgol Penfro (Pembroke School), Milford Haven School, Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Sir Thomas Picton School and Tasker Milward VC School.
Staff responsible for leading ICT and curriculum development in these schools recently attended an introductory training session at the Neyland Centre in Haverford West. Representatives from one school were so enthused with rolling Autology out that they elected to introduce their staff immediately the following week. The remaining five schools have since begun setting Autology training into their school development programmes over the next term.
